New Year Resolutions: Make it or break it

I've never been one for resolutions at the beginning of a year. But I think this year is a good one to start. I've graduated, I'm looking for new career opportunities…so it's a good time to set some short and long term goals to help get down the right path in this new life I'm building.

First and foremost, I must continue to improve my digital creative skills and knowledge. It's times like these, in limbo, where it's easy to become complacent and uninspired. Which is why it's important to remain vigilant in pursuing my muse.

Second, be able to open a jar of peanut butter without injuring my wrist. It sounds rather obtuse, but I'm physically pretty weak. I talk a big game. A really big game. But underneath the crusty shell is a soft, tender core. Well, I want that core to be beefy and not tender. A friend said to me when I expressed my wishes to bulk up, "At the end of the year, I'll bring you a mayonnaise jar, a peanut butter jar and a pickle jar and you can just open them all up for me!" You hear that? I'll open jars for you!

Third, get a job. Well, it should be first, but I think it's a given, no?

I think that's all I'm willing to admit here on a public blog.

Bring on the challenges, new year! I'm gonna kick your ass!

A fresh way to start

Bonjour! Hola! Hello!

This is a personal blog about some issues I'm passionate about: journalism, the arts, feminism, and francophilia. I want to make this an intelligent blog that is not just filled with my own inane thoughts but also a place to converse, collaborate, and inspire. That is part of the reason why I chose the blog title "Je t'ecoute." Because I know, despite many years of grooming as a soprano, that it's not all about me.

Je t'ecoute also comes from a song, "Aicha" by Cheb Khaled. Whenever I go to France or even meet an francophone, they will sing, "Aicha, Aicha, ecoutez-moi!" So yes! Je t'ecoute!

Using Resume Blog as Personal Blog

Someone on Mashable put up a social media quiz (I can’t find it right now) and it mentioned constantly updating your personal portfolio site with professional and personal (but not TMI personal) information.

So I thought, Why not?

What’s up this week:

Posted a couple articles on EcoStreets about Maglev and road construction.
Trying hard to establish a routine after temporarily moving back down from Reno to Las Vegas. I’m (hopefully) starting an internship with the City of Las Vegas. It’s tough being that family members keep showing up and wanting to stay up til 3 am.
Playing Wii. I don’t get to play so much when in grad school, so I’m taking advantage.
Working on a Flash “movie” with my niece who’s a great illustrator. Stay tuned for that
Working on a study to evaluate the economics of parking at Nevada universities.

That’s it so far.

I am a master’s student at the University of Nevada, Reno in Interactive and Environmental Journalism. Here, I hope to learn and invent new ways to think about and do journalism – engaging the public, multimedia, social media, and, of course, writing stories.
