“F@#k this guy!” – Showing tweets at live events

It’s been around a long time so much so that it may have jumped the shark. I’m talking about the ubiquitous Twitter feed on ginormous screens at events, concerts, conferences, trainings, whatever. The kids at RIT are doing a social media experiment in much the same vein, called Rise Above the Crowd. Organizers are hoping [...]

Poynter: Engaging audiences, or dude, journos, you KNOW this!

Later today Poynter is hosting a live chat with Chrys Wu of Ricochet to talk about what skills journalists need to engage audiences. Listen, no disrespect at all to Ms. Wu, but journos, you already know how to engage people! You supposedly do it everyday when you cultivate sources, walk the beat, and dig for [...]

In digital image editing, you’ve got all the tools you need to basically cheat a drawing – filters, layers, rulers, grids, opacity. You need not ever learn how to wield an HB pencil to create, like me.

What makes a productive community?

After listening to a TED Talk by Jane McGonigal I finally found the inspiration to write down what I think a healthy community website should look like. The communities I participate in are HItRecord and BlogHer. These communities work. [You could count Facebook and Twitter on there, but I would categorize those as more social [...]

Tool Time – Apps to help your research

I get easily overwhelmed when I start a project. There’s so much information to digest, so many ideas to process, pages to look at, that I often jump out of my chair and slap on my iPod to release some stress through raucous dancing in the living room. Yep, I’m that upstairs neighbor stomping all [...]
